My series on the trees that I observed in my neighbourhood in New Delhi was part of the group show Summer Somethings at Pulp Society, June 2023. I was particularly struck by the all pervasive Peepul Tree which appeared in all its stages of growth – from a diminutive child in a pot to a destructive adult.
I was also intrigued by the trunk of this tree, which is actually what we observe first, because the trunk is at eye level, unless we are viewing the tree from afar. The trunk of the peepul tree is enormous, and like an intricate map, and also, home to other plants, and a variety of little beings.
I think, the experience of walking within the confines of my neighbourhood, and discovering so many aspects of this tree, was in exercising in slowing down, in allowing wide worlds to show themselves while walking forwards inch by inch.
The works have been made in pen and ink and watercolor.
